Lush Life

Ordinary Things That Everyone Ought To Do Audio CDPurchased

Nina Gromstad - vocals, Rune Klakegg - piano, Jan Olav Renvåg - bass, Stig Sjøstrøm - drums The jazz quartet «Lush Life» has recorded their first album in Oslo´s Rainbow Studio. The four members of the band have united in a shared interest of jazz and pop music of elegance, style and a wink in the eye. The new recording consists of jazz and pop standards performed with sensibility and integrity. Gershwin and Rogers&Hart live next to Stevie Wonder and Randy Newman in a shared acoustic environment, with an elegant, swinging piano trio behind the effortless and refined vocals of Nina Gromstad. The classics «The Very Thought of You», «They Can´t Take That Away From Me» and «The Lady Is a Tramp» are heard in fresh, new arrangements, and Stevie Wonder´s frenetic drum machine groove gets an acoustic relief (finally) in «Part Time Lover». Hidden pearls like Stephen Sondheims «The Girls of Summer» and Blossom Dearies «You Fascinate Me So» are also on the menu, as well as a rowdy version of «The Frim Fram Sauce». The stylistic variety is wide, but the loose, jazzy approach to the repertoire and the fabulous sound engineering of Jan Erik Kongshaug makes for a homogenous and pleasing sound. The musicians: Nina Gromstad is a well known singer in Telemark, formerly one of the «Three sopranos», a vocal group that made a great success on Norwegian TV. Pianist Rune Klakegg is a veteran on the Norwegian jazz scene, with many recordings on the Curling Legs label: Three trio albums, albums with Out to Lunch, Cutting Edge and Søyr, to mention a few. Bassist Jan Olav Renvåg is an accomplished freelance musician, and has played in several of Rune Klakeggs projects as well as with composer Geir Lysne and his Listening Ensemble. Drummer Stig Sjøstrøm is a freelance drummer, known for his duo collaboration with the blues guitarist Daniel Eriksen.
