A recording of two suites by the norwegian composer Henning Sommerro. Recorded December 2015 in Lindemannsalen, Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo by Geir Inge Lotsberg. BRIMI -suite for fiddle and orchestra Per Sæmund Bjørkum, fiddle Five nordic portraits -suite for accordion and orchestra Jon Faukstad, accordion About the music: The music on this CD was Norwegian popular music in the 1800s and 1900s. Today, it lives on with the tags «folk music» and «accordion music». In Scandinavia, the fiddle was the predominant instrument in the 1800s and, correspondingly, the accordion dominated most of the 1900s. Within this framework can be found «periods of glory» for each instrument and its music – their popularity has been and gone, but broadly speaking, they have reigned, set the tone and been the property of the people for 200 years. Both fiddle and accordion music have, after their glory days, lost a lot of their original function as popular dance music, but they are still keenly cultivated in various folk environments. Many of the performers – whether they be fiddle players or accordionists – were celebrities, who had a large following of admirers, and many of the melodies they made known belong to the collective musical cultural heritage in Norway. The composer, Henning Sommerro, has used elements of this material to make a musical portrait of this genre of music, and of a selection of the foremost exponents of the music. Both he and the two performers, Per Sæmund Bjørkum on fiddle and Jon Faukstad on accordion, have a solid background from both folk music and classical music. BRIMI Hans W. Brimi (1917 – 1998) was one of the best known fiddle players, who cultivated a repertoire from the 1800s and composed music in a similar style. In the work BRIMI from 2001, Henning Sommerro picked out five melodies from Hans W. Brimi’s repertoire, three traditional melodies in the middle, surrounded by two of Brimi’s own compositions, and arranged them for solo fiddle and string orchestra. Five Nordic Portraits In the work, Five Nordic Portraits, he chooses from the repertoire of five famous accordionists who span the whole of the 1900s, and thus makes five portraits of five different artists, and also of the instrument and the musical variety to be found within this genre. Gotthard Erichsen (1882 – 1964) was one of the earliest and most beloved gramophone artists in Norway, and many of his melodies have, for more than a hundred years, been on the tip of people’s tongues. Carl Jularbo (1893 – 1966) from Sweden, was one of Scandinavia’s most notable performers and accordion idols. He made nearly 1600 recordings, half of which were waltzes. His popularity was utterly remarkable, and many of his melodies form part of the common repertoire throughout Scandinavia. Toralf Tollefsen (1914–1994) was one of Norway's most internationally renowned musicians. Through concert tours, recordings, composition and transcriptions, he gained an outstanding reputation for himself. He was based in London for 25 years, where he built up a great international career. Andrew Walter (1914 – 1978) came from a small town in northern Sweden and was largely self-taught. His given name was Anders Valter Persson, but when his career gathered pace, he took the artist name of Andrew Walter. He had a very versatile career with radio performances, albums, tours, music publishing and music journals. In addition, he wrote textbooks and composed lots of melodies that became a part of the accordion’s core repertoire. He wrote in several different styles, and his gammaldans melodies are often adorned with distinctive jazz harmonies. Mogens Ellegaard (1935–1995) from Copenhagen was the one who, after a career as an entertainer on, amongst others, Broadway in New York, introduced the accordion to contemporary music, and contemporary music to the accordion world. He got a number of the North’s leading composers to write works for the instrument and premiered and played them so that they spread worldwide. From 1970, he built up a classical accordion class at the state conservatory in Copenhagen, which attracted students from around the world.
