FLUTE MONSTERS AND FEATHERS “Hvoslef Chamber Works No. II” is the second in a series of nine CDs featuring Ketil Hvoslef’s collected chamber music. The idea of documenting all 38 chamber music works on CD was initiated by violinist Ricardo Odriozola and pianist Einar Røttingen, both with backgrounds spanning many years of collaboration with the composer. Ketil Hvoslef (b. 1939) is a productive, versatile, and undogmatic composer, who — well into his seventies — continues to write music at a furious pace. Hvoslef’s style is characterized by an economy of means, accumulation of latent energy, rhythmical ingenuity, and, often, an element of humour, clearly revealed in his descriptions of his own compositions: During my work on the Flute Octet, I imagined a body with eight arms (for example, an octopus). I let the arms go their own separate ways here and there, but it seemed important to make it apparent the whole time that they belonged to the same body. In many instances, this body moves as one and hopefully gives the impression of a unified, yet, all the same, multifaceted, unreal being. A ‘flute monster’! While working on his composition “Duo for Accordions”, Hvoslef found inspiration in the animal world as well, more specifically, in H. C. Andersen’s famous hen house. Again, in Hvoslef’s words: Here it says that ‘a small feather can become five chickens’. In my piece there are seven feathers, or notes (as well as seven words in the subtitle), which become an entire composition for two accordions! The recordings draw from the vast pool of performers in Bergen, where the composer lives and works. The musicians are primarily from the Grieg Academy and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. REVIEWS «I was recently sent this album, and was, to state the least, deeply impressed by the manner of communication he possesses, through singular instrumental combinations, an unremitting sense of humor fused to a line of incessant and remarkably clear direction. […] I loved it -for me, he is one of few composers of our time who has a wonderfully clear sense of purpose.» Leslie Hurwitz anmeldelse_LWC1081_Leslie_Hurwitz.pdf
