THE ETERNAL TRUMPET ”Perpetuum Trompetuum” is trumpeter Erlend Aagaard-Nilsen’s debut recording. As a student at the Grieg Academy in Bergen, Aagaard-Nilsen commissioned and premiered a number of works, intending, among other things, to record them. This type of collaboration between a young performer and living contemporary composers has seldom (or never before perhaps?) resulted in an entire recording featuring new works, and we believe this release is the first of its kind in Norway. The album is a welcome documentation of splendid new works and brilliant performances. Likewise, it illustrates the dynamic forces of a creative musical tradition that are a prerequisite for art to flourish: the active interrelationship of performer, composer and audience! Erlend Aagaard-Nilsen (b. 1988) studied at the Grieg Academy in Bergen, the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. Aagaard-Nilsen has devoted his career to playing new music. All the works on this recording, with the exception of Elegy for Broken Hearts, were written for him and have been premiered by him. A number of the works constituted the repertoire for his Bachelor’s recital at NTNU in the spring of 2014. Jarle Rotevatn (b. 1958) from Bergen accompanies Aagaard-Nilsen on this album. He is pianist of Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and BIT 20 Ensemble, and he is accompanist at the Grieg Academy. He is also Aagaard-Nilsen’s permanent accompanist. They have rehearsed and premiered all the works that include piano.
