Magni Wentzel

Opera & Spanish Music AlbumPurchased

On this record Magni Wentzel presents other sides of her talent than of what she is well known. We know the jazz singer Magni Wentzel – not too many know the guitar player and the singer in classic European tradition. Magni Wentzel got several musical impulses in her childhood. Her mother, Åse Wentzel, was a very popular singer, and her father, Odd Wentzel Larsen, was violinist in three important Norwegian symphony orchestras (and a jazz trumpeter during the 1940-s). The family had close contact with the jazz field, and already when she was twelve years old (1958), Magni recorded a single with some of the best jazz musicians of the time, and fourteen years old a single, accompanied by the superb Einar Iversen trio. As a young teenager she was an established soloist in jazz concerts and clubs. However, she had played classical guitar since she was eleven; with the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra she has performed music of Vivaldi, when she was eighteen, as well as Joaquín Rodrigo’s «Concierto de Aranjuez» later on. She entered the Norwegian Opera School as «potential dramatic soprano», and was studying with Erna Skaug, Almar Heggen and Paul Lohmann. Towards the end of the 1960-s she was concentrating mostly on guitar studies, based in Barcelona, joined Segovia lessons with José Tomás in Santiago de Compostela and was studying with the Basque José de Azpiazu, besides Carlos Bonell and John Mills in England. Back in Oslo, she was pulled into the rhythm & blues field around the Club 7 (recordings from 1970 og 71 released on «NRK sessions – Soul, afro-jazz and latin from the Club 7 scene»), but cultivated after a short while her talent as a jazz singer, from 1974 until the millennium change with permanent bands in her own name. With superb Norwegian and international musicians she made records like «Sofies plass» (1983), «All or nothing at all» (1985), «My wonderful one» (with Art Farmer 1987-88), «New York nights» (1991), «Come away with me» (1993), «Turn out the stars» (1995) og «Divergence» (1997–2002), the four last ones with the piano player Roger Kellaway. The discography was preliminary completed with «Porgy & Bess» (2000) and «Live» (from Oslo Jazz Festival 2003). From the 1980-s there became a stronger mix of jazz singing, classical songs and classical guitar, with emphasis on music by Spanish composers. Magni herself says that her classical aspects «loosened quite late; the jazz singer was blocking» – in the struggles between likings and styles there became much «blood, sweat and tears». At last there is released a record completely devoted to Magni Wentzel’s classical genre.
