“EVEN A DONKEY COULD HEAR IT!” On this fourth album of Ketil Hvoslef’s chamber music we are presented with, as before, a mixture of works written for classical ensembles and unique instrumental combinations. In the miniature “Nordisk kontrapunkt for feler og flasker” we hear two violins accompanied by six beer bottles (Hansa, of course). The work was written as intermission music for the TV programme “Kontrapunkt”. In “Sekstett” (1972), which is the earliest work in this series, we catch glimpses from the composer’s younger years as a jazz/pop pianist and distinctly hear the influence of Stravinsky. Hvoslef happily admits the latter, while quoting a remark by Brahms about the similarity of his music to Beethoven’s: “Even a donkey could hear it!” The two “classical” instrumentations offer some of the most captivating music Hvoslef has written: “Beethoventrio” is one of the most disturbing pieces in his catalogue of works, while “Klaverkvintett” is Hvoslef’s longest one-movement chamber work. In this exceptional composition, the composer dares to stretch everything to the limit, thus creating a tension unusual even for Hvoslef. Ketil Hvoslef (b. 1939) is a productive, versatile and undogmatic composer who — well into his seventies — continues to write music at a furious pace. Hvoslef’s style is characterized by an ecomony of means, the accumulation of latent energy, rhythmical ingenuity and, often, an element of humour. “Hvoslef Chamber Works No. IV” is the fourth in a series of nine albums of Ketil Hvoslef’s chamber music. The idea to document 38 of Hvoslef’s chamber music works on CD was initiated by violinist Ricardo Odriozola and pianist Einar Røttingen, both with backgrounds spanning many years of cooperation with the composer. The recordings draw from the vast pool of performers in Bergen, where the composer lives and works. The musicians are primarily from the Grieg Academy (University of Bergen/Bergen University College) and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
