VIENNESE CONTRASTS “Ensemble Allegria plays as a single body of sound with as many combined wills as there are musicians.” Magnus Andersson wrote the above in his blog after having heard Ensemble Allegria perform Arnold Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht” in 2012. Now at last their recording of the work has been released, with Berit Cardas as guest leader. Allegria’s previous album, “VOLT22” (LWC1082), with orchestra member Frida Fredrikke Waaler Wærvågen as cello soloist, was nominated for Spellemannprisen, Norway’s Grammy, in 2015. On this new release as well, the orchestra’s own musicians are elevated to soloist roles. This time it is artistic director Maria Angelika Carlsen who, together with Marthe Husum, shines in Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante”. Duality and twosomeness is the theme of this album. In Schoenberg’s “Verklärte Nacht” we find it in the intimate nocturnal conversation between a man and a woman in Richard Dehmel’s poem of the same title, while in Mozart’s work the two solo parts together depict a wide range of emotion. Maria Angelika Carlsen is one of Norway’s leading violinists and a much sought-after chamber musician, in addition to serving as concertmaster of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. Violist Marthe Husum can look forward to a brilliant career and is one of few Norwegian musicians invited to play with such renowned orchestras as the Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic. Ensemble Allegria is an up-and-coming chamber orchestra at top level internationally. Founded in 2007, the orchestra has over the years built up a solid career and has attracted attention for its playful performance style and spirited virtuosity. Berit Cardas plays both violin and viola and appears regularly as soloist on both instruments. As a member of Vertavo String Quartet she has performed over two thousand concerts in Norway and abroad and has won a number of prizes. Cardas is also in frequent demand as chamber orchestra leader.
