FROM ETERNAL MACHINES TO CHAOS AT THE POLICE CHAMBER In the opening number on this CD — “Perpetuum Trompetuum” for trumpet and piano — an eternal machine is set in motion by the piano as a kind of “start button” for the entire album. Two trios then follow, one after the other. In “Trio for Oboe, Viola & Percussion” we are introduced to a mystical Icelandic melody in the somewhat archaic atmosphere of a viola drone, while in “Trio V. C. P.” Hvoslef challenges the tradition of writing for violin, horn and piano, with Brahms and Ligeti as its two towering contributors. “Kammerspill” is the first work in the series for sinfonietta instrumentation. It is characterized by the chaos that reigned in and around the Bergen Police Chamber at that time and is one of Hvoslef’s defiantly uncompromising compositions. KETIL HVOSLEF (b. 1939) is a productive, versatile and undogmatic composer who — well into his seventies — continues to write music at a furious pace. Hvoslef’s style is characterized by an economy of means, the accumulation of latent energy, rhythmical ingenuity and, often, an element of humour. “Hvoslef Chamber Works No. V” is the fifth in a series of nine albums of Ketil Hvoslef’s chamber music. The idea to document 38 of Hvoslef’s chamber music works on CD was initiated by violinist Ricardo Odriozola and pianist Einar Røttingen, both with backgrounds spanning many years of collaboration with the composer. The recordings draw from the vast pool of performers in Bergen, where the composer lives and works. The musicians are primarily from the Grieg Academy (University of Bergen) and Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
